Ein Mann steht an einer Maschine und kontrolliert die Security

Machinery Regulation

The Machinery Regulation EU 2023/1230 is a regulation that has been adopted and already passed for the EU market, which (like the Machinery Directive before it) specifies safety and health protection requirements for the design and construction of machinery and related products.

On January 20, 2027, the Machinery Regulation will replace the Machinery Directive and all requirements of the Machinery Regulation will come into force. In order to be allowed to affix the CE marking in future, a corresponding declaration of conformity must be drawn up.

What supplier need to know now

In the Machinery Regulation, the term safety primarily refers to traditional functional safety. However, new requirements regarding security (cyber security) have also been added. The central element in this context is a threat analysis. This defines the extent of concrete measures to be implemented for relevant machine or control system protection, which is intended to prevent malicious attempts by third parties to cause dangerous situations.

In general, it is advisable to follow established, common standards – first and foremost IEC 62443-4-1 – to establish a secure product life cycle (SSDL) in the company.
